Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph 2008 - Rhone Valley, France
I’m convinced that when people say they don’t like Syrah, they have no idea what they’re talking about. Well, at least some of them don’t. Maybe that’s why the French don’t put the name of the grape on the bottle, maybe I shouldn’t even mention the grape myself, because the grape isn’t as important as the place or the winemaker and here’s a bottle to prove that fact. In the nose you get an incredibly complex layer of minerals, spice, leather, red and purple fruits, violets, pepper etc. It’s one of those wines you could smell all night. And in the mouth the expression of all those aromas translate with beautiful clarity and balance. The acidity is broad and balanced too which will make this an amazing wine to pair with food. I’m thinking about a roasted leg of lamb myself, but any grilled or roasted meat will do. So in closing I’d like to encourage you to try a bottle of this Saint-Joseph, not Syrah, and see why I love Saint-Joseph so much!
