Chateau Redortier, Beaumes de Venise 2001, Côtes du Rhône Villages
There was a time when wines with bottle age were not impossible to find but that has not been the case for a while. That’s why I was skeptical when a supplier walked in with a reduced price on a nearly nine year old Côtes du Rhône. But upon tasting the wine my skepticism began to diminish. Aromatically the wine showed complex aromas, not simply the usual young ripe fruit. There was a bit of ripe plum, a hint of lavender, a bit of sweet earth; in other words aromas associated with aged Rhône wines. In the mouth the wine was soft, the tannins burnished by the time in bottles. There was plenty of fruit but it was not the in your face variety, rather it built as the wine traveled my palate, supported by a lovely texture. Hints of spice, and the woodsiness you find in fresh foraged mushrooms, provided complexity. Then I set the glass aside. I wanted to see how it held up over time. Six hours later, as I was leaving the shop I finished the remaining wine. It was still delicious.
So, If you want to experience a mature wine that is drinking perfectly, without spending a ton of money, here is your chance. There’s not a lot around so don’t mess around.
